Christian Studies

Prerequisites: A Minimum of achieved grades in ENG end of year report programme and / or approval from HOD.


This course provides opportunity to explore the Christian faith through the study of the bible. Students learn the importance of working together with others and developing their personal strengths within the course. Students are given the opportunity to influence Bethlehem College and the wider community. All students are required to participate in prayer, bible reading and discussing Christianity. Students will examine the Christian belief about given ethical issues.



Subject Overview

Term 1
Students have the opportunity to Investigate the rise of Secularism in the Western world and the effect it has on Christianity.
They will also investigate the purpose of the Bible in Christianity. Students will participate in reading the Bible, Prayer and Worship time. The students will also be involved in class discussions about life topics. The students will participate in some service activities within the school community. They will develop an understanding of leadership and their own leadership strengths will be actioned through practical activities within the college.

Term 2
Students will develop a more comprehensive understanding of Leadership. They will identify their strengths and learn how to serve in their every day life. The students will gain knowledge and evidence for the Christian faith. They have the opportunity this term to explore the bigger questions in life and build a strong sharing culture in the class. They will learn the Key Beliefs of Christianity and will also investigate some of the beliefs that are more challenging to understand. The students will have regular Bible reading time and will have opportunity to serve in the wider community of Tauranga.

Term 3
The Students will have the opportunity to investigate ethical decisions and the beliefs of the bible on topics relevant to Teenagers. They will learn how to share testimonies, write devotionals and will be sharing within the wider community of Bethlehem College. This term there project will be portfolio based as a show case for Teenagers to be displayed within the school environment.

Term 4
This term is a focus on understanding self and going deeper in the Christian faith. The direction of the content for this term is dependant on the needs of the students. For example if the students do not have much depth in their knowledge around key terminology of Christianity then this will be addressed. This term also focuses on developing strong spiritual disciplines and explains to the students why it is important.
