Year 11 High Performance Sports Science

Although this years timetables are yet to be finalised, course selection is now finished. Any changes to student courses will now take place next year.

Subject Description

High Performance Sports Science

Prerequisite: Prior application and approval by HOD only.

High Performance Sports Science is an academic course aimed at students with a desire to achieve both Physically and Academically at the highest level.  Students who have met participation and behavioural expectations in Year 10 Physical Education are able to apply for a position in the class. Students are required to have a lap top. The course covers the same standards as 11SPS (Sports Science) but the contexts will be in the students chosen sport(s). Units of work will be designed to develop students who have a passion for sport performance, with the intention of helping them achieve success both inside and outside of the classroom.



Subject Overview

Term 1
Anatomy, Biomechanics, and Exercise Physiology. The study of the body, how it works and how we apply it to the performance of physical activities.

Term 2
Interpersonal skills, working with others, being a team player, and looking at how physical activity links with Hauora.

Term 3
Why is it important to be physically active, how can we go about being physically active, and how do we promote the idea of being physically active to others?

Term 4
Demonstrate movements in contexts.

Prior Learning

No prior learning is needed, however a high lever or sporting achieve, desired aspiration, or interest in working in the high performance sports industry is ideal. Students will be selected on the Athletic ability, Academic ability, Coachability, and willingness to be a team player.

Pathway

Career Opportunities in Sports Science and Outdoor Education include;
Teaching, Coaching and Mentoring. Health related careers such and Medical Staff, Physiotherapist, Personal Trainer, Rehabiliotation Therapist, Fitness instructor, Outdoor instructor, Tour Guide, Department of Conservation.

Sports Science and Outdoor Education are also good subjects to develop problem solving, teamwork, interpersonal skills, leadership, organisation, and management.

Further careers such as Management, Administration, Events Planner/Manager, Sports Retail. Media careers such as Journalism, Photography, Writing, Broadcasting. Other related careers include Law, Research, Consulting, Counsiling, Officiating and Entrepreneur.

Assessment Information

Students will be given an assessment task each term that will prepare them for level 2 Sports Science, High Performance Sports Science, or Outdoor Education. This assessment tasks will be based around the learning that they do each term (in their online workbooks) and may come from a range of written, video, oral, and in person assessment tasks.
