NCEA Level 2 Futures Academy

Subject Description

Teacher in Charge: Mrs A. Exelby

Futures Academy (previously known as Trades Academy)

Prerequisite: Entry to this course is only on the recommendation of the Careers Advisor and Academic Deans. Students must demonstrate an interest in a trades or vocational career, and the ability to study independently.

The programme aims to motivate students to stay engaged in learning by providing them with more options for study. It also aims to provide students with hands-on learning and clear pathways post-school by giving them a head start on vocational qualifications.

Students study one day a week at a tertiary institution like Toi Ohomai or Te Wananga O Aotearoa in their area of vocational interest.  They can gain from 17 to 28 Unit Standard credits towards their NCEA Level 2. They will be at school the other four days a week and will have 3 to 4 supervised periods to catch up on the work missed in their other timetabled school subjects on the day they are out of school.

Students cannot take Futures Academy together with Gateway Studies.

Possible areas of vocational interest available (subject to numbers) are:

  • Automotive
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Logistics and Distribution
