Subject Description

Prior Learning

It is important that students wanting to take this subject have a positive attitude and a desire to be in the outdoors. If you do not want to get dirty do not take this subject.

There are camps that are complusory for students to attend.

There are 6-8 day trips

All the rest of the activities are done during lunchtimes and last period classes.


Outdoor Education

Prerequisite: 12 credits in Level 1 Sports Science, must include 1.2 and 12 credits in level 1 English (Reading and Writing), Speaking not included), and 12 credits in level 1 Science or HOD approval.

It is expected that all students will attend all trips, camps, and class experiences. It is also desirable for students to have a laptop. Students may take both 12 Sports Science and 12 Outdoor Education. Both subjects also come from the Physical Education domain so only count as one subject for university entry. Assessment Policy & Procedures
Assessment Information

Students will be assessed at the end of each body of work. There will be a range of modes of assessment from written tasks to videos, oral presentations and in person demonstrations.

It is important to note that if a student is looking to take Sports Science and Outdoor Education (two seperate classes) their credits come from the same learning domain so they only count as one subject together when looking at things like university entrance.

NCEA Level 3 Outdoor Education

Career Opportunities in Sports Science and Outdoor Education include;
Teaching, Coaching and Mentoring. Health related careers such and Medical Staff, Physiotherapist, Personal Trainer, Rehabiliotation Therapist, Fitness instructor, Outdoor instructor, Tour Guide, Department of Conservation.

Sports Science and Outdoor Education are also good subjects to develop problem solving, teamwork, interpersonal skills, leadership, organisation, and management.

Further careers such as Management, Administration, Events Planner/Manager, Sports Retail. Media careers such as Journalism, Photography, Writing, Broadcasting. Other related careers include Law, Research, Consulting, Counsiling, Officiating and Entrepreneur.
