Teacher in Charge: Mrs H. Cason.
Prior LearningPrerequisite:
For students from 11MAT:
For students from 11MAL:
The 12STAT course is designed for students who wish to continue with their studies in Mathematics. It contains the more practical (applied) aspects of Mathematics, with an emphasis on statistical thinking.
The course is predominantly internally assessed, with just one external achievement standard. The emphasis is on statistical thinking and processes, with four of the six standards being statistical standards. Students will develop new skills by learning how to carry out an experiment and completing a simulation. They will learn how to design a questionnaire and will gain an understanding of probability methods. They will also learn how to design a network and will gain trigonometry skills for working with non-right-angled triangles.
This course is meaningfully linked to real world applications of Mathematics and Statistics. It is possible to earn 17 credits with 12 of the credits being NCEA Literacy credits.
Comparing 12MAS and 12STAT:
12MAS | 12STAT |
Co-ordinate Geometry | Simulations |

NCEA Level 3 Statistics and Probability
Statisticians gain insights from their investigations and use those insights to explain what is observed and predict what is as yet unknown. There are many avenues for study and work, from statistical theory to its application in biology, climate science, medicine, the social sciences, engineering, physics, agriculture, finance and economics, and even history and archaeology.
Students who successfully complete the 12STAT course will be well-prepared for Level 3 Statistics and Probability (13STAT).
It does not prepare students for Level 3 Mathematics and Statistics (13MAS) or Level 3 Calculus (13MAC).
