NCEA Level 3 Mathematics with Calculus

13MAC
Subject Description

Teacher in Charge: Mrs H. Cason.

Prior Learning

Prerequisite:

Mathematics with Calculus

Mathematics can be challenging, beautiful, powerful and fascinating. Wherever problems need to be solved, Mathematics is involved. It is fundamental to the study of engineering, virtually all science subjects and useful for many other subjects.

Level 3 Mathematics with Calculus extends and develops the calculus work begun in Year 12.

The course covers the learning areas of Algebra, Trigonometry and Calculus, and is for students with a major interest in the continued study of Mathematics, Applied Sciences and Technologies (e.g. Biotechnology and Food Technology), Physical Sciences, Engineering, Architecture or Economics.

The majority of the credits offered are externally assessed. Students doing Level 3 Mathematics with Calculus will require a high level of algebra skills, and formulation of problems in mathematical terms, use of mathematical reasoning, precision in the use of symbols and the ability to construct and set out methodically a mathematical argument become increasingly important at this level.

Assessment Policy & Procedures
Assessment Information

Three external Achievement Standards will be assessed in a three hour external examination at the end of the year.
This exam will contain three booklets, each one examining an externally assessed achievement standard.

One internally-assessed Achievement Standard: this will be a closed-book test, and will be administered to follow the school’s policy and procedures on lateness, misconduct, extensions, missed/delayed assessments and appeals.
