NCEA Level 2 Mathematics with Statistics
Subject Description
Teacher in Charge: Mrs F. Warner.
Mathematics and Statistics includes mathematical thinking and statistical procedures, which will extend a student’s abilities to tackle simple modelling and problem-solving situations. It will be useful for students interested in Education, Business, Physical Education, Psychology, Management or the Social Sciences where Statistics is required as a supporting subject.
This course combines Level 2 Mathematics and Level 2 Statistics standards, catering to students who prefer an integrated approach over focusing solely on Statistics at Level 2. It provides a balanced alternative to the 12MAT course, without the strong Algebra focus of the 12MAT course.
Students doing 12MAS require competence in the Year 11 mathematical skills, particularly Algebra.
Students taking 12MAS will continue to develop and extend their mathematical reasoning through algebra, geometry and statistics, and also develop new skills in probability, trigonometry and networks. The course is suited to students who prefer the option of more internal assessments, as there is only one external standard.
Comparing 12MAS and 12STAT:
12MAS | 12STAT |
Co-ordinate Geometry (algebra) | Simulations |
Systems of Equations (algebra) | Questionnaires |
Statistical Experiments | Statistical Experiments |
Probability Methods | Probability Methods |
Trigonometry | Trigonometry |
Networks | Networks |
Total credits = 16 | Total credits = 17 |
