NCEA Level 2 Gateway

Subject Description

The Gateway programme is designed to strengthen the pathway between school and the workplace, helping students gain confidence in making the transition from school to work.  Students learn employability skills in addition to focusing on a career of interest to them.

Prerequisite: There are no pre-requisites. Students will be required to work with the Gateway Teacher to determine a specific career focus they are interested in learning about.

Assessment: Students complete Level 2 Unit Standard credits and a work experience placement of 5-10 days - relevant to their identified career focus.

During Gateway classes, students work on employment and industry based Unit Standards.  

Students usually attend their work experience placement one day per week for 5-10 weeks, however, this is flexible depending on the availability of the employer and needs of the student.  Placements usually commence in Term 1 or 2, with the aim of being completed by the end of Term 3.   It is also possible to complete work experience in the school holidays.

Students also attend a two-day First Aid course during term time.

- Building/Construction/Plumbing/Electrical/Roofing/Scaffolding/Forestry/Landscaping

- Infrastructure: Civil Engineering/Telecommunications/Energy/Water

- Retail

- Agriculture/Horticulture/Farming/Bee Keeping/Animal Care/Equine

- Aviation

- Butchery

- Hair/Barbering/Beauty

- Youth work

- Teacher Aide/Aged Care Support/Mental Health Support/Nursing Assistant/Rehabilitation

- and more - talk to the Careers Departments staff about what you are interested in

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

Course costs of $15 per student applies for consumables.
