The Year 11 course will focus on using dramatic elements, techniques, and conventions for specific purposes. Students will be given the opportunity to initiate ideas and refine their dramatic works as well as communicating and interpreting drama. The course will aim to investigate the purposes of drama in past and present contexts and describe how dramatic elements combine to create form and meaning. It will enable the students to increase personal confidence, develop group co-operation skills, commitment, self- discipline and initiative.

Subject Overview

Term 1
Apply Drama Techniques using a scripted play.
10 week course.
This programme requires students to work in small groups (2–5 students) to apply drama techniques together in a dramatic context. The context for this activity is the presentation of a short scene or excerpt(s) from a New Zealand play.
Students will perform in small groups but will be assessed individually.
The student’s application of drama techniques in the dramatic context of a performance of a scene or excerpt from a New Zealand play is emphasised. It is noted that the student’s application of techniques needs to communicate (and thus is appropriate to) the information given in the statement of context.
The presentation length should be approximately 2–4 minutes per scene or excerpt(s).
Conditions
The suggested time for this assignment is 7 weeks. It will involve both in-class and out-of-class time.

Term 2
Perform an acting role. This is performed in groups, but each grade is individually derived.
10 week course. This standard requires students to prepare for and sustain a role appropriately in a live performance. The focus is the application and selection of drama techniques, thus, creating believable characters.

Term 3
Devise and perform a drama using the Brecht form. This is performed in groups, but each grade is individually derived.
10 week course
This activity requires students to devise and perform an original drama, having a Brecht influence. Devising should involve improvisation as a key tool in the exploration and selection of conventions to create elements of the drama. The devising process involves an ongoing cycle of discussion, exploration, and experimentation and you will need to provide opportunities for this to happen and be able to monitor the active participation of students during it.

Term 4
