By the end of the course, you will have learnt how to:
- process financial information for a sole trader, using journals and ledgers,
- look deeper into the accounting system of a firm and give advice to the owner, and
- write professional accounting documents for presentation to a sole trader.
Subject Overview
Term 1
Money Mechanics
A deeper dive into the cornerstones of accounting concepts and notions. You will know how to identify accounting information by its inherent characteristics and by its usefulness for decision-making.
This work will be assessed as an external achievement standard, if successful you will earn 4 of the 19 credits available in this class.
Money Mapping
In this unit we look further into the process of producing financial reports and creating the information included in them. You will be introduced to new depreciation methods and new ways of inventory and financial assets.Rather than focusing on the production of financial reports, this unit hones in on the processing behind the figures on the face of the statement.
This work will be assessed as an external achievement standard, if successful you will earn 5 of the 19 credits available in this class.
Term 2
Insight Investigaton
You will become a competent advisor to a sole trader by using simple mathematics to analyse their financial results. You will be able to explain their results and give good, grounded advice so that they are able to meet their various business goals.
This work will be assessed as an external achievement standard, if successful you will earn 4 of the 19 credits available in this class.
Revenue Roundup
The life blood of a business is cash in the bank. You will learn how to account for customer's unpaid accounts. You will understand the necessity for good credit control and collection processes.
This work will be assessed as an internal assessment, involving both financial processing using Excel and writing an explanatory report that also makes recommendations for the business owner. If successful you will earn 3 of the 19 credits available in this class.
Term 3
Inventory Insights
Assisting a sole trader to manage their inventory will help your client to improve their profitability. In this unit of work you will become confident with using Excel to manage the inventory subsystem for a sole trader firm.
This work will be assessed as an internal assessment, involving both financial processing using Excel and writing an explanatory report that also makes recommendations for the business owner. If successful you will earn 3 of the 19 credits available in this class.
Term 4
Refresh and Refine
As the academic year comes to a close you will spend time reviewing your understanding of the concepts and techniques covered previously in the year. This will prepareyou for the external examinations.
Prior Learning
While prior studies at Year 11 in Accounting are preferred, there are no prerequisites for this course.
However, if you are picking up Accounting for the first time at Y12 you will be required to meet with Whaea Helen before you are approved for the course, and you will be expected to do some catch-up work during the summer holidays.
