This course will introduce you to:
- Accounting for Partnerships, and
- Accounting for a New Zealand reporting entity.
We will also spend time with the legal requirements of doing business.
Subject Overview
Term 1
Buddy Balance Sheets
Learn about and become competent in accounting for a partnership business.
You will learn:
- The Partnership Act 2018, and
- Processing and reporting on financial information for a partnership.
This internal achievement standard includes a demonstration of your understanding of processing financial information using Excel and preparing a report that explains and justifies the variances allowed between the Partnership Act 2018 and a Partnership Agreement. If successful, this assessment will give 4 out of the 22 credits available.
Biz Decoding
A client approaches you for advice - "Which New Zealand company should I invest in?" Your ability to use simple mathematics to analyse a full set of financial reports and to explain and justify a recommendation is on display here.
This is an internal achievement standard and, if successful, will give 5 out of the 22 credits available, including both reading and writing.
Term 2
Fiscal Fundamentals
New Zealand accounting stands apart from the rest of the world with innovative financial reporting standards. This unit will not only further your knowledge about the conceptual basis of accounting but will also introduce the Companies Act 1993 and the Financial Reporting Act 1993.
This is an external achievement standard and, if successful, will give 4 out of the 22 credits available, including both reading and writing.
Term 3
Adventures in Accounting
Enter the new world of company accounting. This new way of looking at financial reporting will keep you on your toes as you discover new journal entries and ledger balances. And that's not even counting the awesomeness of the Statement of Cashflows!
This is an external achievement standard and, if successful, will give 5 out of the 22 credits available.
Project Price Tag
So, how does a business decide on the price of their product? By the end of this short and sweet unit, you will be able to do just that.
This is an internal achievement standard and, if successful, will give 3 out of the 22 credits available.
Term 4
Tune-up Time
You will take time to review and revise the concepts and technical skills you have learned this year. By the end of this time you will be able to confidently approach the external examinations, knowing that you have done your best!
Prior Learning
While prior learning from either Y11 or Level 2 Accounting is preferred, this class has no prerequisites.
However, if you have not studied Accounting before you will have to meet with Whaea Helen before you are accepted into the class, and you will be expected to undertake some catch-up work over the summer holidays.

You will be assessed in this course through all or a selection of the standards listed below.

Number of credits that can be used for overall endorsement: 22
Only students engaged in learning and achievement derived from Te Marautanga o Aotearoa are eligible to be awarded these subjects as part of the requirement for 14 credits in each of three subjects.
