NCEA Level 2 Drama
Subject Description
Teacher in Charge: Mrs L. Anderson.
Drama
Prerequisite: Proven Performance. Interview with teacher.
Note: If a student has not studied Level 1 Drama, please consult with the HOD. All is not lost!
Students will apply drama techniques in various situations and refine their dramatic presentations.
Drama in the New Zealand Curriculum enables students to link their own imaginations, thoughts, and feelings with drama practice and history in ways that give voice to the cultural diversity of New Zealand. Students become increasingly literate in drama as they work with the elements of role, time and space, action, tension, and focus and develop skills in using the techniques of voice, movement, gesture, and facial expression. They use these elements and techniques with the conventions of drama to add richer meaning and colour to their drama work.
Subject Overview
Term 1
91213 Apply Drama techniques in a group within a scripted context. This is a group assessment but the grade is individually derived.
This activity enables students to select and use voice, body, movement and use of space to interpret and present a script working within a group of 2-4 people. The performance should be sustained, truthful and convincing. Students should endeavour to use drama techniques to enhance the performance of the scripted context and communicate the interpretation with impact.
They will be required to support their performance through the provision of a statement of context and an annotated script. These documents should provide an indication of role, situation and relationships within the scene as well what the student intends to communicate (such as subtext and character motivation) and how they intend to do so (stage directions and justified technique choices).
Term 2
91218 Perform a substantial acting role. This is a group assessment but the grade is individually derived.
Students will prepare for their role by attending rehearsals, learning lines to meet deadlines, accepting direction willingly, produce the supporting material of an annotated script and a statement of intention, and cooperating with the group to enable the production to be realised.
Term 3
Devise and perform a drama to realise an intention. Group assessed but grades are individually derived.
This activity requires students to devise and perform a drama, using drama elements and conventions to realise a stated intention. The influential form will be that of Berkhoff.
Term 4
External assessment: Discuss Drama elements, techniques, conventions and technologies within a live performance.
