Satisfactory performance in 10MAT.

Mathematics

In Year 11, all students must select either 11MAT or 11MATN. Your teacher will be able to direct you towards the best course of study for your Year 11 year. Your placement will be affirmed and communicated with you once Year 10 results have been reviewed by the department.

This course aims to give students the necessary mathematical and algebraic skills and background to continue with Mathematics at Level 2, as well as to further develop logical thinking and problem solving techniques. It continues to build on basic mathematical skills, concepts, and understandings that have been introduced in years 9 and 10.

Topics include Algebra and Graphs, Geometric Reasoning and Trigonometry, and Statistics.

Course objectives are that students will learn to:

  • apply mathematical skills, concepts, and understandings to familiar and unfamiliar problems arising in real and simulated situations
  • demonstrate the ability to select and use appropriate mathematical techniques in problem solving
  • demonstrate the ability to reason logically and systematically
  • demonstrate the ability to communicate mathematical ideas

Success in this course is largely dependent on regular attendance at school, and commitment to the work required in class and homework. To be successful, it is important that work during lesson time is supplemented with independent study and revision.

Assessment Policy & Procedures
Assessment Information

The course will be assessed as follows:

Two externally assessed Achievement Standards :
The algebra MCAT (mathematics common assessment task), which will be assessed in term 3.
AS 91031 (1.6) Geometric reasoning, which is assessed in the end-of year NCEA exam in November

Two internally assessed Achievement Standards will be assessed as closed book tests. These will follow the school’s policy and procedures on lateness, misconduct, extensions, missed/delayed assessments and appeals.

Numeracy component: to meet the requirements for a Level 1 certificate, students must achieve 10 numeracy credits. These 10 credits can be obtained from the Mathematics Achievement Standards listed above. Most students will already have achieved some numeracy credits as part of the Year 10 mathematics programme.

Pathway

NCEA Level 2 Mathematics, NCEA Level 2 Mathematics with Statistics, NCEA Level 2 Statistics and Probability

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

Approximately $30 to cover the cost of a textbook slipcover and Maths workbook
A scientific calculator is required, and it is recommended that students purchase a graphics calculator (CASIO fx9860Giii), which will be required in years 12 and 13.
Please refer to the stationery requirements list.
